Guard to join Purdue

Kristy Curry

Mandy Davis, a 5-foot-7 guard from Temple, Texas, has signed a national letter-of-intent to play basketball at Purdue.

A transfer from Weatherford (Texas) College, Davis will have two years of eligibility with the Boilermakers beginning this fall.

"We are very excited to have Mandy join our program," Purdue coach Kristy Curry said. "Mandy is an outstanding player with great quickness and athleticism on both ends of the floor. She will be a great addition to our backcourt and our team."

Davis averaged 11.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.7 steals per game for the Lady Coyotes as a sophomore. A two-time first team all-conference selection and the 2000 Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, Davis earned honors as an honorable mention All-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association following the 2000-01 season.

Weatherford ended last season with a 25-5 record and was conference co-champion.

Davis is the second player to sign with the Boilermakers this year. Emily Heikes (Palos Hills, Ill.), a forward and a senior at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School, signed in November. Davis and Heikes join eight returning Boilers and transfer Laura Meadows, who has one season of eligibility remaining after transferring from Kentucky and sitting out last season when Purdue went 31-7, won the Big Ten regular season championship and finished runner-up in the conference tournament and came within two points of beating Notre Dame for the national championship.

Purdue loses five seniors to attrition — All-American Katie Douglas, Camille Cooper, Candi Crawford, Shinika Parks and Mo-nique Langston.
