Committee to finalize report on communication problems

After four months of discussion and debate, the West Lafayette and Purdue Community Issues Advisory Board is almost ready to present it’s findings to Purdue President Martin Jischke and West Lafayette Mayor Sonya Margerum.

The committee will meet at 4 p.m. Monday at the Morton Community Center Room 108 to finalize its report.

"The best part of this entire process has been for the establishment of communication between Purdue and West Lafayette," said Jan Mills, president of the West Lafayette city council and the co-chairperson of the Community Issues Advisory Board.

The committee was established in January to study and identify the problems associated between Purdue and its neighbors in the surrounding community.

Since that time, the community has held a series of meetings discussing the future of housing in the area, neighborhood life and communication between the University and West Lafayette.

John Sautter, co-chairperson of the advisory board and Purdue's vice president for housing and food services, said one of the recommendations the committee will make to both Purdue and West Lafayette is to continue with the issues board in some capacity.

"The feeling that arose from the group is that there are many conditions that aren’t unique to just one group, whether they are a student, landlord, resident or business owner," said Sautter.

Mills said some of the recommendations the advisory board will make include making community information available on city and Purdue Web sites, fostering alliances between student organizations and neighborhood associations and devising a network in which Purdue and West Lafayette can share information with each other.

The final report will be available after next week at the West Lafayette Public Library.
