Riot discipline continues

Three more students have been expelled because
of their involvement in the April 1 disturbance following the women's
basketball NCAA championship game.
These students appealed the University's decision,
but the campus appeals board upheld it, expelling the students. "We
have four more riot related appeals to hear yet," said Stephen Akers,
executive associate dean of students.
This brings the total to nine students expelled,
four suspended, 18 arrested, three non-students arrested and the four
more pending cases.
Akers said he expects these appeals to be finished
before the summer begins and he said he's not surprised by the amount
of students the Office of the Dean of Students has seen. "We have had
contact with 57 students involved in it in some capacity; at various
levels of involvement," he said.
Jim Vaca, student body president, said he's glad
the University has taken such a strong stance against the students who
allegedly participated in the April 1 melee. He said he's glad the University
pursued the students and proved this type of behavior would not be tolerated.
"I don't think it's gone too far," said Vaca. "I
dont think it's gone far enough the other times it's happened.
I think after the last riots there wasn't much ramification, but this
year there was."
Vaca said he thinks it's a shame that some of the
students' college lives were taken away from them, but these students
should have thought about that before they became destructive.
"It's good (the University) is showing that we're
not going to mess around and tolerate these kinds of actions," he said.
"Sometimes students feel that with a campus of 36,000 students 'who
cares what one person does?' But actually a few students made a huge
difference as far as hurting our reputation."
By disciplining these students to the degree they
are, Vaca said Purdue administrators are showing how much respect they
have for the school.
According to a release, the April 1 disturbance
caused more than $75,000 in damage to buildings, vehicles, trash containers
and trees on and around Purdue.
