results

"Job well done" was the major theme of the Grand
Prix weekend review which took place at the Alcohol and Other Drug Risk
Reduction meeting on Thursday.
Representatives from many organizations including
the Purdue and West Lafayette police departments, The Grand Alternative,
the Office of the Dean of Students and the Greek system attended the
meeting to review the result of efforts to curb irresponsible drinking
during last week's Grand Prix weekend.
It was fundamentally agreed that this year's Grand
Prix was a significant improvement over previous years in terms of the
level of police activity.
John R. Jones of the Office of the Dean of Students
cited four major reasons for the decreased amount of alcohol-related
criminal activity. They included the efforts of the Grand Alternative,
the dramatically increased police presence, the University Administrators
challenge to "Take Back the Campus," and the highly publicized sanctions
placed on students as a result of the disturbance earlier this month
resulting from the women's basketball championship game.
The Purdue and West Lafayette police departments
and the Indiana State Excise Police each had representatives and were
thrilled with the weekend's outcome. One of the most applauded results
of Grand Prix weekend was the substantially lower amount of incarcerations
when compared to last year's weekend.
"The number of incarcerations was cut in half,"
said Mike Francis of the West Lafayette Police Department.
Francis commended the conduct of the student body
and said he was appreciative of the impressive cooperation between the
several police agencies around campus.
"It was a relatively quiet weekend," he said.
