New campaigning program begins for senior class gift

Next year, the class of 2001 will not be dedicating a new bench or sculpture to the Purdue University campus.

Reid Ricciardi, the associate director of class gifts in the University Development Office, said, "There has been a restructuring in the senior class program taking place, and one of the reasons is due to the decline of participation of the senior students."

Bruce Hufford, director of annual giving, said, "In the past, senior classes have not done exceptionally well in raising money for a senior class gift. There has been a lot of effort put into the program by students and faculty in the University Development Office, and (they) have gotten no return out of it."

Participation has been well below 10 percent of the senior classes in the past, and the way the program is structured right now is not useful, said Hufford.

In response, the University Development Office is going through a transition away from senior class gifts to a campaign to get students involved in giving back to Purdue.

The campaign is still in the works, but the goal is to go from senior to senior in each school and show them the importance of donating to the University.

Ricciardi said, "It is not like we are asking for a $1,000 upon graduation, just for a little donation that will get them in a habit of giving so they will as alumni, because it ends up being a great help for the University over time."

In the past, the methods in marketing the senior class gift include the Purdue Foundation Student Board sending letters, making announcements at football games and putting information on the Student Services Information Web page. Now, with this new program, they will be reaching smaller groups of seniors, which will be more effective, said Ricciardi.

The University Development Office has been benchmarking with other schools to see their methods in senior class giving and learning from them.

Hufford said next year he sees this program taking off due to the anticipation of a lot more publicity, the new student leadership, and a new Web site.
