The plots that will be used to demonstrate the
latest in farming technology for the Farm Progress Show 2001were planted
by Tippecanoe County farmers on Thursday.
The show, which will be in Tippecanoe County from
Sept. 25 through Sept. 27, will take place on the farms of Alan Kemper,
Jerry Smit, Steve Gamble, Forrest Johnson and John Rice. The farms are
located on County Road 700 South.
Dave Petritz, associate dean and director of cooperative
extension service at Purdue, said Purdue would benefit from this year's
show.
"I think the benefits of having it right here in
Tippecanoe County are tremendous in terms of two things," said Petritz.
One benefit Purdue will receive is the increased visibility for its
campus, he said. In addition, it will allow people to learn about Purdue
and its research.
Purdue takes great pride in their involvement with
the show every year, said Petritz. Purdue sponsors displays, activities
and discussions as the show travels between Indiana, Illinois and Iowa
each year.
"If it sounds like I'm bragging, I am," he said.
In 1992, the television show "Good Morning America"
ran its opening scene next to Purdue's display at the Farm Progress
Show. The show expressed national interest in the annual farm show.
Because the show's site is so close to Lafayette
and Indianapolis, Purdue plans to direct the second day of the event
toward people from those urban areas.
"We will gear some of the presentations and discussions
toward those people so they can learn more about agriculture," said
Petritz.
Plots at the show will include corn, grain sorghum,
soybeans and alfalfa.
Horse and cattle handling demonstrations will take
place every day at the show.
