Boilers serve 4-0 defeat
to Penn State Thursday
The mens tennis team picked up a decisive
4-0 victory over Penn State on Thursday at the Big Ten Championships.
The sixth-seeded Boilermakers will face No. 3 Northwestern at 10 a.m.
today.
"We were out there playing to win today," Purdue
coach Tim Madden said. "We are going after it and got off to a very
good start. Even though the day was pretty windy, we handled it well
and I am very pleased."
The Boilermakers earned the doubles point with
ease at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Jason Marshall and Dan Swan stopped
Jamie Gresh and Matt Nielsen 8-3. Scott Mayer paired with Derek Miller
to defeat Steven Westhuyzen and Matt Frakes 8-4.
In singles action, Mayer started the winning trend
with an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory over Nielsen at the No. 2 position. Andrew
Wakefield denied Frakes 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3. To seal the match, Miller
defeated Todd Stecko 6-0, 6-2.
"Northwestern got to sit back and watch us today,"
Madden said. "Since we beat them in the season, they want to come out
and prove their seeding. I kind of like this feeling. We have nothing
to lose and our guys can get this done."
