Boilermakers prepare for
golf championship this weekend
The Purdue women's golf team looks to defend its
Big Ten championship this weekend when it takes place in the 2001 conference
championships in Minnesota.
This spring, the women's golf team has taken part
in several golf tournaments.
At the Bryan National Collegiate they took fourth
place.
As a team, the Boilermakers shot a third round
total of 281, a combined seven strokes below par. Only tournament champion
Duke (279) had a better score than Purdue in the third round.
"We're looking forward to the improvement going
into the Big Ten Championships," Purdue coach Devon Brouse said after
completion of the third round. "We are very proud of the record finish
we had today, especially the fact that three of our players broke par."
Three Purdue golfers shot below par and another
Boilermaker made par. Caroline Laurens had a tournament-low 68, four
strokes below par, to pace the Boilermakers' third-round surge. Andrea
Makauskas shot a two under par 70 and Kari Damron shot a one under par
71. Heather Zielinski shot even at 72 while freshman Beth Hermes continued
her strong spring season with a 75, tying her second round score.
Earlier in March, the women's golf team finished
in third place, as it completed play at the Betsy Rawls Golf Classic
in Austin, Texas.
"We didn't have quite the weather we had in the
previous two rounds, but our girls hung in there," Brouse said. "We're
proud of Kari Damron and her overall performance. We've seen some great
improvement from our whole team and are looking forward to our next
tournament to see more improvement."
As a team, the Boilermakers shot 303 for the third
round, fourth best of all 12 teams. Damron shot a par 72 to finish second
overall. Zielinski and Makauskas tied for 19th overall. Zielinski shot
a 79 while Makauskas, who competed as an individual, shot a 77 for the
third round. Freshman Beth Hermes also shot a 77 for the third round
to finish 22nd overall. Also representing the Boilermakers were Laurens
and Christy Rittenhouse. Laurens shot a 75, her best round of the tournament,
to finish 31st overall. Rittenhouse finished play with an 87 to finish
54th overall.
In February, the women's golf team came away with
an impressive third round, closing out a successful weekend at the Midwest
Classic in Dallas, Texas. Competing against some of the nation's top
teams, the Boilermakers finished in seventh place ahead of Big Ten rivals
Northwestern, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin.
Rittenhouse led the Boilermakers with a three-round
total of 230, shooting a 75 for the third round, matching her first
round score. Rittenhouse also finished 11th overall in what was arguably
the best tournament of her Purdue career. Laurens also shot 75 for the
third round, finished with a total of 233, good enough for 20th place
overall. Zielinski came back to shoot 76, 234 for the three rounds.
Hermes had the best tournament of her young college career, shooting
a 79 for the third round and a 238 overall. Makauskas also finished
with a 79 for the third round, finishing with a three-round total of
242.
