Purdue beats Minnesota,
faces Northwestern today
The womens tennis team defeated Minnesota
4-1 in the first match of the Big Ten Tennis Championships in Columbus.
The ninth-seeded Boilermakers will face No. 1 Northwestern at 10 a.m
today.
"It is amazing how far this team has come in the
last month," head coach Mat Iandolo said. "Things are going really well
and we are looking forward to the future. Tomorrow we have everything
to gain and nothing to lose, so we will come out ready to win."
Purdue claimed two of the doubles matches to earn
the point. Melissa Woods and Missy Wright paired to knock off Valerie
Vladea and Michaela Havelkova 8-6 at the No. 1 position. At No. 3, Erika
Quebe and Gretchen Haynor recorded an 8-5 win over Brandi Watts and
Andrea Rose.
In singles action, Quebe pounded Vladea 6-2, 6-4
at No. 1 to get the Boilermakers motivated. Haynor followed at No. 3
with the exact scores over Havelkova. Fick finished the day for Purdue
with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Rose at No. 6.
