Within the next few weeks, construction may give
West Lafayette motorists a few obstacles to avoid.
City engineer Scott Snyder said one third of the
area between Kalberer Road and Soldiers Home Road will be rebuilt. The
project is already underway but construction will extend into the end
of May.
"The road is closed to all but local traffic already,"
said Snyder.
In addition to those roads being rebuilt, more
construction will deter local motorists.
Lindberg Road has been a concern for city officials
for several years. After much deliberation, the state will open bids
on May 22 to rebuild the road between McCormick Road and Northwestern
Avenue, said West Lafayette mayor Sonya Margerum.
"It will be a great improvement," said Margerum.
The construction plans include a new hiking and
biking trail and golf tunnels that will connect to the golf course located
along Lindberg Road. The large hill that is located on Lindberg Road
will be taken out to improve visibility for drivers, said Margerum.
In addition to these city streets, larger projects
will be taking place in the area.
A project that will allow drivers to travel through
downtown Lafayette along Fourth Street and over Harrison Bridge is underway.
Although the construction is causing some traffic
havoc now, the new road will be a benefit to West Lafayette, said Margerum.
"It will look a lot better than if it were left
the way it was and it will be easier to move from one segment of the
city to another."
Other roads will be resurfaced throughout campus
during the summer months while many students are away.
"It's usually a speedy process and doesn't obstruct
traffic too much," said Snyder.
Most projects are required to be finished by Aug.
15 when students begin returning to campus.
