University to charge fee
for events using fountains
By Ian Clift
Summer reporter
This summer, event planners requiring the use of
Purdue fountains will be asked to pay a fee of $20 to turn them on.
Joe Bennett, vice president of University Relations,
said the fee is simply the cost of turning the water on as well as having
someone to monitor the fountains.
Monitors, who consist of Purdue staff members from
the physical facilities department, will be used as a safety precaution
while the Landscape and Agricultural planning committee decides on a
permanent solution.
Purdue graduates will not be seen running through
the fountains this year. Monitors will allow walking but not running
through the fountains. "If anything unsafe happens they are authorized
to have the water shut off," said Bennett.
Monitors are necessary to address the safety concerns
that have been brought up by the University. "We have determined that
the fountains are not safe as they were run before," said Bennett.
Many people have already been charged the $20 per
hour fee for the use of the fountains during the last few weeks. Some
of those people included a couple getting married, a group celebrating
staff appreciation and a writing class that wanted students to write
about the fountains.
Not everyone agrees with the decisions of the University.
Graham Cooks, a professor of Chemistry, said, "I am not happy that the
fountains are off at the moment. I would leave them on until some permanent
solution was reached."
Cooks, whose personal interest led him to chair
the sub-committee against the fencing proposition, said, "We need to
get beyond the present state of affairs." A new committee, made up of
students, staff and community members, has been set up to do just that.
Bennett said, "The committee is an ad hoc committee
called the landscape and agricultural committee, constituted to study
the fountain safety concerns."
Monitoring the fountains and limiting their use
is a temporary solution to the safety concerns. The planning committee
is assessing permanent solutions. Members of the committee would not
comment at this time.
Bennett said, "I hope (the fountain issue) is resolved
today, but I don't think it will be." He feels the issue will be resolved
by the fall but can't be sure.
