Program offers GM employees
master's degrees from IU, Purdue
By Ian Clift
Summer Reporter
Purdue graduates working for General Motors Corporation
will have the opportunity to couple a masters in engineering from Purdue
University with a master's of business administration from Indiana University's
Kelly School of Business through an online program.
GM employees who have received their master's degree
in engineering from Purdue and other universities will be eligible for
the Kelly Direct Online MBA program.
GM, Indiana's largest private sector employer,
started the program as a way to retain more employees after they received
their MBA. The program will allow GM engineers to obtain their business
degree without leaving their job location.
Previously GM encountered a loss of employees after
they returned to school to obtain their MBA. The program will allow
GM to continue paying for masters programs without losing as many employees.
Ray Eberts, director of Purdue's Continued Engineering
Education Department, cited two reasons why this program is helpful
to Purdue.
"One reason is that students who receive masters
degrees from us are Purdue alumni," said Eberts. The program allows
Purdue alumni to advance to leadership positions. The management degree
will allow GM employees to better meet industry and management standards,
he said.
"The second reason," said Eberts, "is that this
program allows those students who graduate with an undergraduate engineering
degree to stay in engineering for several years before getting a degree
in management." Most management degrees are sought after 10 years in
the industry.
The Kelly school was selected because of it's standing
as a management school and its capacity for the online program. It is
the only school with an online MBA degree.
Purdue University is one of several special schools
selected by GM for it's engineering program. Other schools in the GM
program are the University of Michigan, Carnegie Mellon University and
Kettering University.
The program begins January 2002 and is open to
current and future GM employees. Around 50 students are expected to
enroll when the program begins, with an estimated target of 150 after
several years.
