Workers demolish Stripe Shop; prepare for new dining services

GONE: The sight of the former Stripe Shop, in the basement of the Purdue Memorial Union. The space will be filled by a Frëshens, which will offer pretzels, smoothies and frozen yogurts. The shop is scheduled to open in the fall.

The Purdue Memorial Union said farewell to the Stripe Shop last week as it was demolished to give room to Villa Pizza and Frëshens, a new addition to the dining services offered by the Union.

Mary Enos, Special Events Catering Manager for the Purdue Memorial Union, said plans for the construction of Villa Pizza are running smoothly and ahead of schedule. She said the demolition of the Stripe Shop was an easy operation and consisted mainly of pulling out equipment such as ovens and tearing down the old counter.

In addition to the opening of Villa Pizza, which is scheduled for July 9, a healthier alternative will replace the spot where the Stripe Shop was located. The Union chose to replace it with a growing franchise company called Frëshens.

Frëshens, which has been scheduled for a fall opening, will be the second franchise company in the Union and its menu will consist of smoothies, frozen yogurts and pretzels.

Art Anderson, supervisor of cash operations of the Union, said this is not the first time the Stripe Shop has changed its façade and its menu. He said that back in the ‘30s it used to be an ice cream parlor.

Although the Stripe Shop will be replaced by a Purdue-operated franchise shop, Anderson said students will not have any trouble with it being a franchise store. He said that the new additions to the Union have been well received.

Enos said Villa Pizza will not open its doors with a big celebration, but on the other hand both Villa Pizza and Frëshens would be showcased at The Taste of PMU, a yearly event held the first Friday of the fall session. She said this is a popular time to showcase the new units and offer students samples of the Union's dining services.

Although the Strip Shop was demolished last week, Enos said students would not miss it because Villa Pizza will provide all the Italian food in the Union and Frëshens will offer a new alternative to students. "It's an improvement for the students because they will have a greater variety," said Enos. "People are excited of all the changes going on. This is something students will recognize."
