Room 106 of the Morton Community Center is often
used for card games and get-togethers. Its walls are taupe and small,
dark wood tables line the room along with matching chairs and ceiling
fans that circulate the air around them.
Bringing to life the otherwise drab room is a variety
of colorful pictures created by young students from the community center's
art classes.
Fashioned by students ages 6 to 15 the artwork
will be on display from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. until May 23 in the center.
The exhibit is free to the public.
Many of the pictures portray animals in their habitats,
such as a yellow butterfly fluttering around a pink flower, or a sparrow
resting in a patch of greenery.
Not all of the artwork of animals are traditional
however, among them is a giant whale swimming in baby blue water and
a koala bear climbing a tree beneath a bright blue sky.
Brenda Lorenz, director of the Morton Center, said
some of the students were given a photo to try to recreate what they
saw.
While most of the artwork focuses on animals, others
concentrate on subjects such as old wooden barns and people.
"With children's art, people think it will be boring,
but it isn't," said Bette Goodrich, art instructor. "It's amazing."
The Morton Community Center offers many art classes
throughout the year for children and adults, often holding exhibits
to allow the opportunity for the artists to display their work and receive
recognition for it, said Lorenz.
"(It's) nice for people to see different artwork
to see what children can accomplish," said Lorenz.
