Aquatic Center hopes for June completion

ALMOST FINISHED: Purdue's new Aquatic Center, located at the Recreational Sports Center, is scheduled to be open at the end of June and ready for use by early July.

The new recreational sports Aquatic Center is scheduled to be completed by June 30 and available for student use by July.

New features will be added to make the center better equipped for swimming competition.

There will be a diving well separate from the new long course pool. The well can be converted into a swimming facility.

Ross Watson, senior associate director of recreational sports, said the facility would be state of the art compared to what was available for the swim teams in the past. The pool will be bigger, with eight 50-meter long course lanes. It will be possible to convert the pool into 20 25-meter short course lanes with removable bulkheads.

The facility will house the most modern air handling system available so that there will be humidity control. The center will also have a state-of-the-art chemical control system so the pool won't smell like chlorine, which will be better for the health of swimmers, said Watson.

The new diving well will have two 1-meter springboards, two 3-meter springboards, a 1-meter platform, 3-meter platform, 5-meter platform, 7 1/2-meter platform and a 10-meter platform. The diving well will also have a new bubbling system, which will aid in the prevention of potential injury during diving.

Joe Mikesell, senior director of engineering and construction, said that the project is 90 percent complete and the minor setbacks with brick delivery in April will not hurt the completion of the center.

In addition to the center, bonding authority was granted last month to renovate the basement of the Recreational Sports Center. The basement houses aerobics and weight machine rooms. After its completion, the basement will be turned into a new aerobics facility.

The renovation project is scheduled to begin around December or the first of the year and will take approximately nine months to one year to complete.
