in Lafayette

Due to growth in population and plans for improvement
in Lafayette, more construction is scheduled to begin this summer.
Wages for four new construction projects were discussed
and approved last Thursday. The projects approved were the addition
of curbs, gutters and sidewalks on Ferry Street, traffic signalization
at 9th and Salem and 9th and Union, the Twyckenham Overpass, and a new
hotel is scheduled to be built on the empty lot located on Columbia
between 5th and 6th Street.
Sherry McLauchlan, the director of Project Development,
said the projects will not cost Lafayette residents any money in taxes.
City clerk Lisa Decker said that the new curbs
and gutters on Ferry Street will cut back the flooding of the street
when it rains.
Decker said that the city's traffic signals take
turns being updated and maintained. This year two signals on 9th Street
are to be treated.
"Every year, we like to update the traffic signals
in the city to make sure they all work properly," she said.
The Twyckenham Overpass will connect 231 to Brady
Lane.
"This should take a lot of the pressure off the
roads that lead into town," said Decker.
A Holiday Inn is scheduled to be the new hotel
on Columbia Street. Decker said that a need for a hotel was determined
by a market study done in the area.
"Holiday Inn determines the need," said McLauchlan.
"But we've always been interested in having a hotel downtown."
