Appointee in charge of computer
systems
From Staff Reports
Purdue University announced Thursday its appointment
of its first vice president of information technology.
"(Purdue) saw the need to integrate all of the
(information technology) activities on campus. This is not uncommon
schools have been doing this for some time," said James Bottum, executive
director of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the
University of Illinois.
He will begin in August and be responsible for
the planning and coordination of all computing and information systems
in the University, which include the Purdue University Computing Center,
telecommunications operations and Purdue Management Information.
He said he will develop a strategic plan for the
information technology on campus that will align with the overall strategic
plan being developed by the administration.
Bottum is a 1976 graduate from Florida State University
with a degree in political science and attended law school at the State
University of New York at Buffalo.
He has also worked for the National Science Foundation
where among his positions was associate director of the foundation's
Super Computer Program.
The appointment is subject to approval by the Board
of Trustees, which meets at 10:30 a.m. today in the LSF Lounge at Purdue's
North Central Campus.
