Construction to begin next

Construction of a mixed-use 48,600 square foot,
four-story building with a basement is scheduled to begin June 1.
State Street Commons will be located on the corner
of State Street and Andrew Place next to Steve and Barry's University
Sportswear.
The structure will include 36, two-bedroom apartments,
complete with one parking space per apartment and a balcony off of every
living room.
"The first floor will contain about eight thousand
square feet of commercial space," said owner Barry Morris. "The space
is still available."
Morris resides in Lexington, Kentucky and is part
owner of the nearby Andrew Place Apartments. "Purdue is a wonderful
school," he said. "Were really looking forward to being there."
Eleven new "nose-in" one-hour parking spaces will
be placed on Andrew Place for commercial use. To accomplish this, Andrew
Place will continue to be a one-way street, but be two-lanes.
The commercial space is still available for purchase
and many surrounding businesses are curious as to the type of businesses
that will choose to occupy the space.
"I heard that they were going to put in a Village
Pantry," said Denise Melo, manager of Steve and Barry's. "A small convenient
store like that would be nice."
Because State Street Commons will be next door
to Steve and Barry's, Melo is concerned that the construction may damage
her building. Apparently, during the digging of a few preliminary holes
on the property, the uncovered holes filled with water and caused Melo's
basement to leak water.
"Whenever the city messes with the underground
pipes or power lines, we almost always are effected somehow," she said.
Though she is slightly bothered by the construction,
Melo is sure that everything will work out in the end.
The project is scheduled for completion by March
of next year.
