City updates transportation plan, proposes area changes

The city of Lafayette is already planning for the year 2025.

The updated Transportation Plan for 2025, adopted Wednesday, includes: construction of the Hoosier Heartland Industrial Corridor route from Lafayette to Fort Wayne; the extension of McCarty Lane over the Interstate; the construction of US 231 to I-65 and SR 43; the extension of Cumberland; Tapawingo Drive both north and south of SR 26; Twyckenham Boulevard; CR 500S; and Park East Boulevard. Also included in the proposal are the widening projects such as SR 26 east of US 52, SR 43 north of I-65, I-65, SR 25 (Teal Road) and US 231 south of CR 500S.

Jim Hawley, executive director of the Tippecanoe County Area Plan Commission, said the plan, which has to be updated every five years, ensures all new projects are eligible for federal funds.

He said the commission updates the plans based on population growth. "In the year 2000 the population of Lafayette was 138,955. We project the population to add (roughly) 45,000 in 2025," he said.

The expansion of the main roads is due to the continued growth in employment and retail development, making Lafayette a major regional attraction.

Hawley said these plans are adopted now "to alleviate problems in the future."

One solution proposed in the Transportation Plan would solve the congestion of the intersection of SR 26 and US 52 by allowing right-turning vehicles to continue to use the existing intersection, while all left-turning vehicles are to be directed to a secondary elevated intersection.
