Peters

Effective July 1, Jerry Peters, head of the department of curriculum and instruction for the School of Education, will be the interim dean of the School of Education.

Peters was appointed interim dean to replace Marilyn Haring, who will be on sabbatical next year, while the search continues for a permanent replacement.

"I consulted either in person or by email with key administrators, members of the search committee and all of the faculty in the School of Education about possibilities for the interim appointment," said Sally Frost Mason, who will become Purdue's Provost on July 1st.

Peters, born on a farm in Randolph County, has been affiliated with Purdue since his undergraduate years. He earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Purdue and earned his doctorate from Ohio State in 1980.

After working for a year as a visiting assistant professor, he began his tenure in 1981. He has been head of the department of curriculum and instruction since 1996.

"Dr. Peters’ name was mentioned by a great many people as someone who had the skills to manage the school and the confidence of his peers in understanding the issues critical to the school during the coming year," Mason said.

"It was upon (Mason's) request that I accepted," said Peters. "I will accept the challenges before me and work with the faculty and staff in a collaborative team effort."

The search for a permanent dean will continue into the next academic year.

Mason said, "I feel this is an important appointment and wish to be more involved in the process after I arrive on campus in July."
