The Board of Trustees on Friday authorized $13.4 million to fund new phases in the renovation of Cary Quadrangle and Lilly Hall, as well as the construction of a new forestry research facility.
The renovation to Lilly Hall will be in its fifth phase, said Tom Schmenk, architect and director of physical facilities at Purdue, and is part of a 14-phase project, which began six years ago and is expected to continue for the next 20 years.
This phase consists of renovating spaces within the third floor of the biological science library located in Lilly. The 2,800 square feet will be made available through the reconstruction in order to provide space for library expansion. The budget will be $2.5 million for the current phase, said Schmenk.
"Basically we're just upgrading the entire building," said Schmenk, "all the labs, offices and everything needs to be seriously upgraded."
Architects and planners have worked with Lilly staff to find out their highest priority and to minimize inconvenience to the work and learning environment.
The second phase of the Cary Quad renovations is expected to begin on the heels of first phase completion in August, said Schmenk. This phase was awarded to Kettlehut Construction for their bid of $6.3 million.
Tom Paczolt, manager of Cary Quadrangle, said, "With this phase of construction there should be less interference than with the current phase because it will be limited to the north east portion of the complex."
The new phase of the project will be essentially the same as the last phase, said Paczolt, including the complete gutting of the interior of the building and remodeling of the individual rooms.
Rooms will be larger and air-conditioned with every two rooms sharing a bathroom.
"We think we're giving the students what they what," said Paczolt, "based on the number of students who applied for the rooms; we think were right on target."
In addition to the continued construction projects, the board also approved $3.7 million for the construction of the Martell Research and Education Center by Schmidt Associates Inc. of Indianapolis.
The facility will be located eight miles from campus on land used extensively by the forestry and natural resources department. Ground breaking is expected to begin during the winter of 2002.
The facility will contain offices, research laboratories, teaching laboratories and greenhouses for students and staff to conduct research on hardwood trees.
