What is now a gravel parking lot will soon be transformed into an $11.5 million investment towards the future of downtown Lafayette. The lot, located between Fifth and Sixth, South and Alabama streets, is the future site of the Holiday Inn Select City Centre.

Construction of the eight-story building will begin in June and is scheduled to open in August 2002. The hotel will include 142 guest rooms, as well as an executive floor with king-sized rooms, conference facilities, a full-service upscale dining facility, catering services, an 8th floor lounge overlooking the courthouse and river, business center, gift shop and indoor pool.

At the groundbreaking ceremony Thursday morning, mayor Dave Heath said it has been a longtime dream of his for the property to be utilized for the benefit of the community and to boost its economy. He continued to say that the hotel represents many things for Lafayette. He said it will be a visually striking image that will draw people to the downtown area, offering other businesses the chance to thrive which in turn will enhance the economy and provide jobs.

The hotel developer, owner and operator is Murphy/Reader Associates with development assistance from the Lafayette Urban Enterprise Association, the builder is Duke Construction of Indianapolis and financing is provided by Old National Bank of Terre Haute. Funding for the City's site development work is through Salin Bank and Bright National Bank, both of Lafayette.
