The Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony at 12:30 p.m.
Monday will begin at five Points (the intersection of Main, South and
Alabama streets) march along Main Street to Wallace Street, proceed
to Park Avenue, enter Colombian Park and continue on to the ceremony
at Memorial Island. The theme for this years' parade and ceremony is
"Remember Pearl Harbor 1941 to 2001" in remembrance of the 60th
anniversary of Pearl Harbor.
There were 35 entries into the parade this year:
Lafayette mayor Dave Heath, West Lafayette Mayor Sonya Margerum, state
representative Sheila Klinker, state senator Ron Alting, almost all
the military organizations, Girl and Boy Scouts, antique cars, an antique
firetruck from the Veterans Club, to name a few.
"It should be a nice parade," said Randy Fairchild,
Veterans Service Officer. "It's kind of the same that we have every
year."
The keynote speaker at the ceremony is Captain
Joel Weber, commander for the Navy ROTC at Purdue and Master of Ceremonies
is Joe Bumbleburg, the Klondike Middle School band is performing, Gary
Steinhardt, professor of agronomy at Purdue; and retired colonel of
the Army Reserves is reading Flounder's Field. "We've got some Purdue
flavor this year," said Fairchild.
He said the parade will be canceled if the rain
is too bad, but the ceremony will continue at the senior citizen's center
in the park
Fairchild said the amount of people in attendance
for the ceremony and parade has grown every year. "It's amazing, my
first year, we had more pigeons and ducks than people. Last year, not
only every bleacher was full, there was no place to stand."
American Legion post 492 will begin its tribute
to the Veterans at the Tippecanoe Battlefield with a 21-gun salute and
taps. Then it will proceed to various cemeteries for more 21-gun salutes
and taps. The veterans will then continue to the Indiana Veterans Home
for a special program at 11a.m. in the MacArthur Auditorium. The program
is conducted to remember and honor all the men and women who have served
their country. The keynote speaker will be Congressman Brian Kerns.
Cal Cree and Ed Howard will read the names of deceased Veterans and
spouses and the ladies auxiliary unit will present a wreath of poppies
to the Veterans Home.
"It's a very nice program," said Chuck Parker,
chaplain of American Legion post 492. He said that the veterans who
are able to come down enjoy and appreciate it.
