This weekend, approximately 800-1,000 members of
the John Purdue Club will gather to play golf and have dinner on Purdue's
golf course.
John Purdue weekend is designed to give back to
the members of the club for their support and enthusiasm for the athletic
association, said Greg Christopher, director of the John Purdue Club.
The club has members from all over the world; however,
this weekend, most will come from around the United States.
Twenty-five percent of the athletic association's
$32 million budget comes from John Purdue Club donations. Fifty percent
comes from ticket sales and the other 25 percent come from miscellaneous
domains.
Anyone can join the John Purdue Club, but most
of its members are Purdue alumni. However, anyone excited about Purdue's
athletics is more than welcome to join, said Christopher.
The biggest expenses the club pays for are the
athletic scholarships given to some 500 student athletes. Every year,
the bursar's office sends the association a bill for about $15 million
for the tuition of athletic scholarships.
The annual golf game started its tradition about
30 years ago, when the club began having John Purdue Weekend. About
250-300 people will play in the golf tournament with the remaining guests
only eating the dinner. The dinner is catered by the Memorial Union
and will serve pork chops Friday night and a beef dinner Saturday night.
Besides dining and golf tournaments, the weekend
is also dedicated to acknowledging individuals who have significantly
contributed to the athletic association.
On Friday night, the black coat award will be given
to the person who has shown significant leadership and service to Purdue's
athletics. Saturday night a similar award, the Diamond P award will
be given to the person who has shown distinguished service for Boilermaker
athletics.
"The John Purdue Weekend is the biggest opportunity
to bring together Purdue fans, coaches and administrators," Christopher
said. Members of the club will be able to interact with most of the
athletic coaches including Gene Keady, Joe Tiller and Christie Curie.
Leroy Keyes, assistant director of the John Purdue
Club, said any event that brings together supporters of Purdue's athletics,
and brings out the fan base, contributes to the growth of the club as
well as Purdue's athletics. It helps bring together people of diverse
backgrounds, bringing them all onto the same page by trying to help
student athletes.
