Students staying on campus for the summer looking
to spend a lot of time at the Recreational Sports Center, should be
prepared to be charged for use of the facilities. If they are taking
classes, but not full time, they will have to pay a fee of $14.
The summer fee has been active since 1957 when
the RSC first opened. Unless you are a full-time student taking at
least six credits during the summer session, you will be responsible
for paying the membership fee before you use the equipment.
The fee has some students irritated. Christine
Yonker, a junior in the School of Liberal Arts, said it is unfair
to be charged a fee to use the RSC. She said she is a part-time student
because she cant afford to be full-time, but is still a part
of the University.
"If I am a part of the University, I should be
able to be a part of all of it, such as the RSC, without having an
extra fee that I cant afford in the first place," she said.
"I would rather go running or some other type of exercise for free."
She said any University member should have the
privilege of using the facility free of charge
Nonetheless, the RSC continues to earn the business
of many students during the off-season. An estimated 1600 students
will have memberships to the facility in the summer.
Kris Hayman, a senior in the School of Liberal
Arts, had to pay the fee to be a summer member of the RSC. He said
the facility offers more equipment than other workout centers he has
been to.
Hayman also said the center is not busy in the
summer. "During the school year it would take me two hours to do my
workout, but now I am done in about 45 minutes," he said.
That, coupled with the inexpensive, three-month
membership is what draws him to the RSC. He said the membership to
the RSC is less expensive than any other fitness facility around.
To buy a summer membership to the RSC, students
must pay the $14 fee before their first visit.
