The redesigning and implementation of student service
processes, dubbed the TRAX Initiative, is well on schedule for a July
2003 completion date for its first major component the Academic
History and Monitoring Project.
The first part of the project was initially set
for a 2005 release date. "Based on what we learned, we rethought our
development plans and trimmed approximately 18 months off the Academic
History and Monitoring Project," said Thomas Robinson, vice president
of student services, in a University press release.
By its targeted completion date in July 2003, the
Academic History and Monitoring Project would be expected to provide
electronic access to academic program requirements, individual plans
of study and monitoring of students' programs and grades.
TRAX is an ongoing project that will redesign the
existing databases, whereupon all student services applications are
run, such as SSINFO. This will allow the redesigning and developing
of an integrated student information system that will be responsive
to instructional, administrative and academic needs.
Lee Gordon, director of student services computing,
said the current systems were made in the 1970s, thus a restructuring
of the systems was needed.
Jeff Buchanan, TRAX communication specialist, said
TRAX is all about creating an integrated student services database and
simplifying the business processes. He also said TRAX is not an acronym,
but a word that symbolizes their philosophy of moving forward into the
future.
