The West Lafayette city council will meet at 7:30
p.m. on Monday to discuss the plan development for the Osco drug store,
which is to be built on the corner of State Street and South River Road.
The drug store will offer many essentials for students,
such as food, cleaning supplies and a pharmacy, said Mayor Sonya Margerum.
Brad Windler, city council member, said "(It) will
be good for students and it's within walking distance for many." The
store will be similar to that of the Osco located on Navajo Drive, he
said.
Besides offering many conveniences to students,
Margerum said it's going to be an attractive layout. "They've spent
a lot of time on architecture and landscaping," she said.
Another major topic of discussion for Monday's
meeting will be the financial plans that are available for the city's
new mid-mount, aerial lift fire truck.
Margerum said the financial plan that the council
will most likely adopt is one similar to that of a credit card payment,
except it's a lot more expensive and for a greater period of time. The
city would pay for the truck over a 10 year span, she said.
It is possible; however, that the financial planner
will propose a shorter pay off period, but decreasing the pay off time
would raise the cost of the payments on the truck, which would inevitably
raise taxes, said Margerum. "(It's) probably more reasonable to expect
a longer period," she said.
The truck, which will cost $650,000, will replace
a 25-year-old fire truck; it will be larger and higher allowing firefighters
better access to tall buildings, Margerum said.
Windler said "A city needs to have a ladder truck;
something that can get the firefighters to a higher level."
Other subjects to be discussed are the Community
Development Block Grant, the comprehensive road construction plan and
the bicycle and pedestrian plan.
The city council meeting will be held at
City Hall.
