The primary topic of discussion at the West Lafayette
City Council meeting Monday night was the rezoning, from commercial
use to planned development, for the construction of the Osco Drug Store,
which will be located on the southwest corner of State Street and South
River Road. The new zoning process will allow the city more flexibility
in the store's design.
The council passed all 11 of its scheduled topics.
Peter Theodore, architect, said Osco will have
an "urban edge." Included in this new design will be a low wall sign,
windows on three sides of the building and a plentiful landscape. Theodore
also added that the materials to be used in the store's construction
will "stay fresh." "This is going to be a win, win for everybody," he
said.
Mayor Sonya Margerum added that she thinks this
will be an attractive building. "(It) will be a centerpiece for the
edge of the levee, a real drawing card," she said.
Construction for the drug store will begin in the
fall.
Overall, council members agreed that Osco will
be a great addition to West Lafayette, and the new design will emphasize
its importance.
Windler said, "It will be a nice quality of life
addition."
The secondary topic of the meeting was the financial
plan for the city's new mid-mount, aerial lift fire truck, which will
replace a 25-year-old truck.
The council decided on a leasing plan in which
the city will sell bonds to pay off the truck over a span of time. Once
the truck is paid off, the city will obtain ownership, said Gerald Malone
of H.J. Umbaugh and Associates. The truck is expected to arrive by March
2002.
In regards to Purdue Relations, Councilor Brad
Windler was glad to report that Purdue had "an event free graduation."
Windler also reminded attendants of the meeting
that there would be many people on campus in the next few weeks that
do not know their way around. His recommendation for the people of West
Lafayette was, "watch for traffic."
