Academic advisers present
career guidance, useful
info

Academic advisers are not only individuals who
can help incoming students with registration, but they are also there
to help plan a clear college career path.
"Advisers have a good sense of what is available,"
said Erik Props, an adviser in the School of Management.
There are many reasons students visit their advisers;
one of these reasons is to schedule classes. Dennis Bowling, director
of Liberal Arts undergraduate academic advising and career services,
said, "I encourage students to come up with the schedule they want to
have."
Advisers may also have an idea of what courses
students may or may not enjoy, Props said.
While scheduling classes is an important component
in college planning, it is even more important to meet with an adviser
from the start, Bowling said. "Day on Campus is a good time to start
building a relationship with an adviser," he said. "It is vital to start
meeting with an adviser right from the start."
While meeting with an adviser for the first time
students may ask questions about Purdue and the concerns they have about
becoming a college student, Props said.
Props said he also encourages students to take
part in Day on Campus because students may obtain valuable information
about several things that affect them daily.
"Don't be afraid to ask questions," Bowling said.
While academic advisers are willing to help students
plan their careers, Bowling said, "I really want students to be engaged
in that process."
Props said he encourages all students to make good
use of their advisers and solve all problems early.
