Students wishing to get involved in the multitude of student organizations on campus can turn to the Purdue Student Union Board (PSUB), who is holding its annual activities carnival on Aug. 24, the first Friday of classes.

The activities carnival will provide information from representatives from several of the 617 student organizations on campus.

"That night in the Union we’re going to have the Welcome Back Bash," said Heather Owen, program services advisor for PSUB.

The Memorial Union will be filled with energy from 7 p.m. until midnight. There will be karaoke, bands, a mentalist, novelty picture taking, a "make your own video" booth and dance lessons available. The bowling center will be open and the First Nighter for the glee club will be held.

"The whole Union will have stuff going on," said Owen. "And it's all free."

"Our main purpose is to provide programs in the Union." She said about her organization. "The students serve and are part of all the decisions that are made in the Union."

Sara Solloway, programs director for PSUB, said, "Our other purpose is to provide quality leadership and quality programming for students."

Some of the activities PSUB offers are a weekly film series, a concert series, the Battle of the Bands and various shows and events in or around the Union.

"New students can become members to help organize those events," said Solloway.

They can become project organizers, project leaders and eventually directors within the organization. They have the opportunity to become involved in one of the many committees such as concerts, recreation, cultural events, traditional events, films and marketing.

Students will also find that becoming a PSUB member gives them the opportunity to provide services for their peers and gain skills that will help them in interviews, time management and getting a job.

Owen said, "We are very open to new ideas. We have positions available for all different areas of involvement," she said. "We have something for everybody."

PSUB was founded in 1920 with five student members. Today, the organization represents the variety of interests on campus with more than 50 members and more than 80 yearly events.
