Students may not be able to visit their family
physician while they are living away from home. For this reason, students
should consider Purdue University Student Health Center when in need
of certain medical attention.
Jim Westman, director of the center, said, "We
offer both primary care medical services and counseling services to
Purdue students and their spouses."
Twelve board certified, licensed physicians, one
psychiatrist and six certified nurse practitioners staff the center,
also known as PUSH. The medical clinic is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. weekdays when classes are in session. Urgent care is open from
8 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekdays when classes are in session and from 10 a.m.
to 6 p.m. weekends during the school year.
Westman said each full time student pays a health
fee, included in tuition, that covers the cost of services such as unlimited
visits to a physician or nurse practitioner; nutrition consultations;
up to eight hours of consultation with Counseling and Psychological
Services (CAPS); a portion of services provided in Urgent Care; reduced
rates for flu shots; and health education services and resource materials.
Urgent Care sees students with acute illness or
injuries such as lacerations, sprains or dehydration, said Westman.
Some services that arent included in the
health fee are laboratory tests and radiology work, minor procedures
performed by healthcare providers, physical therapy treatments, immunizations,
physicals and prescriptions. Westman said the health center does everything
possible to keep the fees low. "We essentially try to give students
the best health care for their dollar," he said.
The fees can be paid with cash, check or credit
card. Charges covered by insurance can be paid in part or full, depending
on the student's policy.
If a student needs a prescription filled, he or
she can get it filled at the Pharmacy Building located adjacent to the
health center. The pharmacy participates in most, but not all major
prescription insurance plans.
When scheduling appointments, students are recommended
to do so a week ahead of time, although walk-ins are welcome.
Working alongside the health center, the student
Wellness Office provides the educational aspect of healthy living for
students. Nancy Maylaph, director of the office, said "We offer students
educational information, various resources and program services."
She said that during the school year, the wellness
office does some outreach programming in classes, residence halls, sororities,
fraternities and cooperative housing. The programs cover areas such
as sexual health, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and general wellness,
such as stress management, women's health programs, exercise and fitness
and nutrition programming.
Maylaph also mentioned the various campus events
the wellness office sponsors. Most recently is "Buckle Up, Boilers,"
a campaign urging Purdue students to buckle their safety belts.
She said another great aspect of the wellness office
is its resource room where students can borrow all kinds of props and
information for educational purposes. "We offer lots of opportunities
for students to get information from us," said Maylaph.
The health center is located on the corner of University
Street and Stadium Avenue, across from the Civil Engineering Building.
The student Wellness Office is located in the health center, room 201.
