Purdue organizations cater
to variety of students interests
Clubs offer chance for students
to get involved with others
By Ian Clift
Summer reporter
There are 617 student organizations for new students
to get involved in when they come to Purdue and that number is changing
daily.
Students wishing to find help searching for the
right organization can turn to the Office of Student Activities and
Organizations located in Schleman Hall, Room 250.
Pablo Malavenda, director of student organizations,
said sometimes making a decision about which organizations to join is
not as easy as it seems.
"We work with students to find a club to get involved
in," said Malavenda. "You will definitely find an organization that
will fit, there are quite a few clubs at Purdue that are nationally
renowned from bass fishing to golden key honor society."
Malavenda said the office would help students create
an organization that caters to their interests if they are unable to
find one already in existence.
The office offers a variety of resources for students
wishing to get involved in leadership experiences. "The most traffic
we get is actually helping student organizations plan events on campus
and for fundraising," he said.
Tamara Rice, assistant dean of students, said,
"We offer leadership opportunities, there are two classes we offer every
semester."
The office also offers conferences and workshops,
including one for sophomore and one for officers of organizations, as
well as a library containing material about team building activities,
diversity, affective leadership styles, parliamentary procedures and
delegation.
Malavenda also encourages students to attend the
Activities Carnival offered by the Purdue Student Union Board the first
Friday of the fall semester. "We participate in the activities carnival,"
he said, "(representing) the rest of the organizations that are not
in attendance, we work with students one on one to offer suggestions."
"Volunteering and getting involved in your community
is a life long mission, it's all about what you individually are passionate
about."
