PUCC labs provide computers

By Morgan Conklin
Summer Reporter

Purdue University Computing Center labs, familiarly known as PUCC labs, are located throughout campus and provide students with computers nearly any time they need one.

When coming for Day on Campus, freshman students will activate their account in a lab. To do this, a student will swipe their Purdue ID card and follow the instructions that are posted on the screen. Activation can take place in any lab, and will not take more than five minutes.

All students that attend the University will have an account, but students are not required to use it. However, there are advantages of having one, said John Campbell, director of MIDC. "The purpose of the labs is to provide facilities for students in instructional endeavors," he said. "Faculty require projects, and the labs provide a resource to get projects done."

There are 60 labs throughout campus in both academic buildings and residence halls that have PUCC computers. The smallest lab contains six computers with the largest lab having more than 100 computers, said Phyllis Veach, assistant director for the computing center.

The labs contain Macintosh, UNIX or PC computers, have at least one printer and in most cases, a flatbed scanner.

Students are given a variety of applications to choose from when using the labs. Some of these include: Netscape, Office, Photoshop and FrontPage, said Veach.
