YWCA provides women with services

By Jamie Teibel
Summer Editor

The Young Women's Christian Association is working hard to "create opportunities for women's growth, leadership and power in order to attain a common vision: peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people," so says its mission statement.

Kristin Matz, public relations for the YWCA, said one big way it helps women is by providing domestic violence intervention and prevention programs. It also helps women who have low-income levels get Pap smears and mammograms, has programs for the elderly, teaches wellness and fitness through classes and raises awareness in the community. She said that by "empowering women and promoting diversity," the YWCA in turn helps the community.

Youth departments, childcare ministry, kids club and summer and holiday break day camps are some of the programs offered for children. For adults, the YWCA provides support groups, discussions, help with anger management, child management and family communication skills.

Matz continued to say that the specifics of the programs help women by giving them the chance to take better care of their children and families. "Helping women and their families is like a package deal. You get the woman and her family. By helping her, you are helping her family," she said.

Matz added that the facilities are not only for women, men are also welcome.

United Way, grants, memberships, revenue from various programs, donations and the community fund the YWCA.

Depending on the area where it is located, the YWCA has a paid staff who have expertise in certain areas to help those in need, volunteers who assist with hotlines and work at the women's shelter and board members who help with events sponsored by the YWCA.

Cindy Svajgr, executive director at the YWCA, said "We are proud of the strong relationship the YWCA has with Purdue. She said many students are employed there as volunteers and interns. Also, the YWCA assists at the Purdue University Student Health Center (PUSH) on Fridays to provide female students with health services.

The YWCA of Greater Lafayette is located at 605 N. Sixth Street in Lafayette.
