Students prepare for University career during Day on CampusBy Anna Herkamp The first day of many students' college academic careers began Tuesday with the first day of Day on Campus. Last year, approximately 6,100 students participated on Day on Campus, according to Alan Hefner, assistant director of admissions. For about 18 days, beginning June 12 and going until July 6, the program will encompass students' preparation and acquaintance with Purdue. There are three main tasks students have to accomplish during Day on Campus. First, they attend the informational meeting about their school. They meet with their academic advisor to plan their fall schedules and set up their computer accounts. In addition to these requirements, students may also take credit placement exams for foreign language and math classes and visit the residence hall they will be living in next year. There are also extracurricular activities such as ROTC, Black Cultural Center activities and other clubs that will have information available to new students. Bike lanes provide space for cyclistsPurdue has a large campus, so to save time, many students will ride their bikes to get around. Those that do should be aware of the many bike lanes that are provided by the University. "We want there to be bikes on campus, but riders need to be conscious of where the bike paths are," said landscape architect for physical facilities John Collier. "Likewise, pedestrians should pay attention to where they're going so they don't get hit." Celebration to provide food, music to visitorsDespite last year's rainout, Jayne Burke, assistant director of the Tippecanoe Arts Federation, is optimistic about this year's turnout for the Taste of Tippecanoe celebration. The Taste of Tippecanoe will take place from 4 p.m. to midnight June 16 at 2nd, Main and Ferry streets and the John T. Myers pedestrian bridge. Advanced tickets for the taste are $4 for adults, $2 for children; at-the-gate-tickets are $6 for adults, $2 for children. |
