Committee to discuss campus improvements

State Rep. Sheila Klinker (D-Lafayette) announced today that the State Budget Committee will be considering the approval of a request for $3.2 million to be used in two repair projects.

The funding request will be discusses at the next State Budget Committee meeting June 22.

The projects for which the funding is expected include an upgrade of the main electrical substation on campus, as well as the installation of a fire sprinkler system in the Physics Building.

She said that although there are many important projects being planned and in wait of funding approval by the budget committee, these two projects are being rushed so their completion date can be prior the start of fall semester classes.

The repair projects are being given priority over construction projects because of safety concerns, said Klinker.

"There are needed repairs that would structurally help the university," Klinker said. "Everything (it's been done) that makes it easier for the faculty and student students to perform their best."

The electrical substation upgrade, which will prevent future power problems, will cost $2.7 million, while the sprinkler system will cost $850,000.

The goal of the new sprinkler system in the Physics Building is to ensure greater safety for Purdue students and faculty, she said.

"I am very pleased that the budget committee are considering the funds to be disbursed right now, so the projects are finished before classes starts," she said.
