Summer is a time for students to relax and spend
their time doing what they want. For band students, summer is the
time to do just that.
Last Tuesday was the first official rehearsal
for University Summer Concert Band. Because there are no auditions,
the band is open to students, Purdue staff and community musicians.
Rehearsals will be 4 to 5:15 p.m. every Tuesday
in June at Elliott Hall of Music. The concluding event of the band
will be a free public concert at 7 p.m. July 10 at Slayter Center.
"Slater Center is a wonderful place to see a
concert," said Kathy Mater, Purdue Bands Public Relations. "It makes
summer fun. The music is free and you can come in wearing whatever
you have on."
Director William Kisinger said Summer Concert
Band has been an attractive alternative for musicians who like to
perform but find it hard to make long term commitments to performing
groups.
"In the summer its a much more relaxed
atmosphere; its a great opportunity to keep playing in the summer,"
he said.
"Its great in the summer because everyone is
here because they want to be, not because they have to be," said Mater.
For band students, there is the option of obtaining
two hours of academic credit by playing in the summer. Those interested
can receive credit in either Band 330 or Band 430.
Ranging from Andrew Lloyd Webber to Aaron Copland,
the songs that are practiced and performed offer a wide selection
of music so everyone can find something they like.
"It's a well-rounded program," said Kisinger.
"We try to have something for everyone."
In the past, the band has had as many as 60 members,
and there is always room for more, said Kisinger.
