From Staff Reports
The School of Agriculture announced Friday the interim head for the animal sciences department.
Alan Grant, a professor of animal science, will begin serving as the interim head July 1.
Victor Lechtenberg, dean of the School of Agriculture, said Grant was chosen for his reputation and accomplishments, which includes many published papers. He said Grant has great people skills and an ability to work with students, faculty and the administration.
"Most importantly, he has the support and the confidence of his peers," he said.
Grant has been at Purdue since 1990 and has researched and taught the areas of skeletal muscle development and growth. He received his bachelor's degree from Cornell University and his master's and doctoral degrees at Michigan State University.
As interim head, Grant will oversee the entire department, which include its undergraduate studies, research efforts and the extension program.
Jeffrey Armstrong, the previous department head, has been appointed dean of the Michigan State University College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
A national search for a permanent replacement will begin later this summer. The new head is expected to be selected some time in the winter.
