Since he was a child, Christopher Layer has been attending the Indiana Fiddlers’ Gathering as a spectator. Now that he is older, he is performing on stage.

The gathering will begin Friday and run through Sunday. Layer and his band will perform each day during the weekend.

In preparation, Layer will be featured at the Knickerbocker Saloon Thursday evening. "The purpose of the show on Thursday is to have fun and get ready for the weekend," he said.

Denise Wilson, an administrative assistant in the department of economics, has been attending the festival since she was a teen-ager. "The first time I went I was 13, and I haven’t been able to stay away," she said. "The gathering is almost like a family reunion with those people who keep coming back every year."

Different types of jazz, blue grass and other musicians will be featured in the festival. "One of the neatest things (about the gathering) is that there are so many different kinds of music; you never know who you are going to hear, but they are always high quality groups," Wilson said.

The Indiana Fiddlers' Gathering Inc., a not-for-profit organization, hosts the gathering. All of the proceeds from the weekend will go to support future concerts around the area.

Depending on the weather, Kirk Hallman, executive director of the gathering, expects anywhere between 6,000 to 10,000 spectators.

Layer said, "I encourage everyone to come out to Fiddlers’ Gathering to be part of a great tradition."

l The pre-show will be held 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday at the Knickerbocker Saloon. Tickets are $4; spectators must be 21 years old to attend.
