Kevvin Hankins said he probably wouldn't have gone
to college at all had it not been for the minority engineering programs
and Upward Bound programs at Purdue Calumet in Hammond, Ind.
Now that he is a graduate of Purdue, Hankins decided
he wanted to give back to the programs where he got his own direction
and guidance for the future.
Hankins decided to be a staff member for the Minority
Engineering Program's summer program for middle school students, which
concluded Thursday night in Shreve Hall's Golden Room dining hall.
The main purpose of this summer program is to expose
underrepresented ethnic groups including African-American, Mexican-American,
Puerto Rican American and Native American middle school students to
the fields of engineering and science.
This year, Verizon donated $30, 000 to Purdue's
Minority Engineering Program at the dinner.
The dinner, which was a closing ceremony for the
five day program, gave students the opportunity to show off what they
had learned during the week.
Each staff member was responsible for one aspect
of the week's activities. At the dinner, the staff honored the students
who had gone above and beyond the expectations of the activities.
One staff member, Roland Thorpe, a graduate student
in the School of Veterinary Medicine, presented the award for math skills.
First, second and third place awards were given in the form of Purdue
T-shirts, Rubik's Cubes and Monopoly board games.
Maiyuwai Reeves, assistant director of Purdue's
Minority Engineering Program, said the purpose of programs like this
one is to help students of different ethnic backgrounds make informed
decisions about their future.
