New exhibition center officially opens

After nine months of construction, Cumberland Place Exhibition Center officially opened on Monday.

Cumberland Place is owned and operated by Gregg Murphy and Ron Reader, the developers and owner operators of the University Inn Conference Center & Suites and the soon to be Holiday Inn Select City Centre.

"It's a nice surprise for the area," Murphy said.

Susan Foresman, general manager, said that Cumberland Place has 34,000 square feet of sellable space. She said that much space allows conventions, trade shows, concerts and other large venues.

"In our marketing efforts for the past nine months, we have gone to different areas in the state actively soliciting people," said Foresman.

Stacy Davis, operating manager, said that Cumberland Place's main goal is trade shows.

For events such as these, Graham Hall, which has the capacity to hold 2,000 people for a banquet style dinner, can be divided into halves or thirds, depending on the expected amount of attendants. Davis said that audiovisual equipment, carpeting and running water could be supplied at an additional cost. Cumberland Place provides all in-house catering in a state of the art kitchen, said Davis.

The second floor of the building houses 6,000 square feet of board and conference rooms, show offices and three "salons," Nelson, Griffith and Prescott, that could be divided into thirds. These rooms contain windows that overlook Graham Hall. Davis said that people use these rooms to count the number of people that attend an event and will also be used as box seating for concerts.

One major benefit of Cumberland Place is the revenue it attains for the area, said Foresman. "When they come into town they stay at hotels, buy gas before they leave town, shop. It benefits everyone; everyone gets a piece of the pie," she said.

The owners and operators of Cumberland Place have planned a formal ribbon cutting ceremony in late August for meeting planners across the state and area clients.

Cumberland Place Exhibition Center, 1780 Cumberland Ave., is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., tours can be scheduled within those hours.
