The West Lafayette Redevelopment Commission approved
the funding for the Cumberland Park basketball courts Thursday.
The funding for the courts will come from the Kalberer/Cumberland/Blackbird
funds.
No basketball courts exist at the park, but by
the end of the fall the lighted courts will be installed and will be
open to the public.
The courts will be available all day and evening;
the lights will shut off after "normal" operating hours, said Joe Payne,
superintendent for the parks department.
The basketball hoops that will be used on the courts
will come from Tapawingo Park's existing basketball courts.
Payne said that the construction of the Cumberland
Park basketball courts will be good timing because the Tapawingo Park
basketball courts will be closed due to the Tapawingo renovations; this
way Cumberland Park will serve as an alternative basketball retreat.
Once the second phase of Tapawingo Park is underway,
new courts will be installed. Tapawingo Park's basketball courts will
not be completed until 2002.
In addition to approving the funding for the Cumberland
Park basketball courts, the Redevelopment Commission also approved the
authorization to pay bills on the Levee Plaza parking garage.
The garage's construction crew is working on elevator
installation, directional sign postage and cosmetic corrections, said
Josh Andrew, director of development.
The garage will house 941 parking spaces and cater
to the Wabash Landing area, including the attached apartment facility
and the Hilton Garden Inn, which is to be constructed south of the garage.
The parking garage is scheduled to meet final inspection
on July 13 and open later next month.
