Boilermaker senior golfer wins State Amateur by seven strokes

After his seven-shot victory Friday at this year's Indiana Amateur Championship, Purdue senior-to-be Lee Williamson is taking a couple days off.

Williamson posted a final-round 70 en route to his 2-under-par performance at the Otter Creek Golf Course, leaving him the only golfer under par for the championship.

"It's the tournament I have looked forward to in the summer for the last several years," said Williamson. "I really focused on winning it before I played it. I prepared well."

After his couple days of mental rest and physical relaxation, Williamson will be teeing off again and hopes his run at the amateurs will provide him with some momentum.

"It's pretty satisfying because it's such a big tournament, but now that it's over, I can just use (the momentum) in other tournaments," said Williamson, who takes his amateur title to the North-South Amateur at Pinehurst.

"It's momentum for the rest of the summer and then for next season," said Williamson, whose final round 70 tied Terre Haute's Mike Payne for the final round's lowest score. It was also Williamson's lowest score of the four rounds.

Williamson, a Crawfordsville, Ind., native, fired a four-round total of 286, seven strokes in front of trio of amateurs. Tied for second place with a 293 were Greenwood's Joshua Oldham, Poseyville's Kevin Wassmer and Zionsville's James Sacheck.

Williamson, who was named to the 2001 PING All-America Team as an honorable mention selection, led the Boilermakers this past season with a 73.33 stroke average over the course of 40 rounds. Williamson tied for fifth at the NCAA Central Regional, in helping the Boilermakers to a first-place finish. He also helped the team to a second-place finish at the Big Ten Championships. His low round for the season was a 68 he shot at The Gator earlier this past spring.

Williamson was also an All-Big Ten selection for a second year in a row.
