of bridge

Mayor Sonya Margerum was glad to announce the opening
of the 231 bridge at Thursday's West Lafayette pre-council meeting.
Margerum had the opportunity to ride over the bridge,
which has been under construction since 1995. "It looks beautiful,"
Margerum said. The bridge will decrease the traffic in downtown Lafayette.
Another report Margerum brought to the council
was the funding for the fire department's new fire truck has been approved.
The truck is expected to arrive in 2002.
At 7:30 p.m. on Monday in West Lafayette City Hall,
the council will discuss the annexation to the city of two lots located
on the corner of Catherwood Drive and State Road 43.
The lots are owned by the Purdue Research and Development
committee and were left out of a previous annexation, which consisted
of the surrounding lots. "We're just doing a little clean-up," said
Mary-Ann Owen, attorney for Purdue.
The lots are clear, and as of now there are no
plans for building on the sites.
The council will also discuss the removal of trees
throughout the city. All of the trees to possibly be removed are in
danger of falling on cars if a storm comes, Margerum said.
In addition to discussing annexation and tree removal,
the council will also view a presentation on the preliminary designs
for the new police station. The designs are not the final designs, however,
"(the designers) have worked very closely with the police department,"
Margerum said.
