On June 20, a resolution passed stating that the
Greater Lafayette Community Development Corporation accepts the master
plan for Lafayette's Wabash Riverfront Project.
The corporation is a "non-profit group whose goal
is to encourage and facilitate property renewal that will benefit the
entire community." It is the first community development corporation
in Greater Lafayette.
The corporation has endorsed and agreed to participate
in efforts by Lafayette to develop a possible $50 million 450-acre riverfront
site for recreation and business.
Richard Cosier, dean of the School of Management
and member of the Community Development Corporation executive board,
said the city is looking at improving the waterfront area, possibly
having a larger extent developed into parklands. He referred to it as
"recreational friendly territory."
Cosier said that the design of the area depends
on a host of issues, including funding.
Dennis Carson, executive director of Lafayette
Urban Enterprise Association and interim director of the Community Development
Corporation, said the association has set aside $25,000 in its budget
for the project. "One of the first things we have to do is set some
design standards," he said. "We want a common theme for the buildings
and projects."
After design standards are set, Carson said he
hopes the projects and programs will spring from that point. He said
there is some momentum behind the concept of a dog park and the area
surrounding McCallister Park. Carson said the output of the project
"gives the opportunity for people to interact with the river."
The Wabash Riverfront master plan includes: neighborhood
and trail linkages to Heritage Trail, Battle Ground, Downtown Lafayette,
Purdue University, business within a park, both south of US 52 and Ninth
Street, a golf course and environmental recreation with a canoe launch,
dock, fishing pier and scenic overlook.
It also includes plans for McCallister Park as
an overlook park with special event and festival grounds, a dog park,
a grassy amphitheater and a sculpture garden; active recreation at Riverfront
Park with a skate park, fishing pier and scenic overlook; Waterfront
Promenade with a lighted river walk to Riehle Plaza; and Shamrock Park
with a scenic overlook and river walk linkage to West Lafayette.
