Purdue receives third verbal
commitment for 2002 season
From Staff Reports
After receiving verbal commitments from two quarterbacks
for the 2002 football season thus far, Purdue coach Joe Tiller just
got them a little protection.
On Thursday, Purdue received its third verbal commitment
of the season when Fort Wayne offensive lineman Pat Oxley decided to
become a Boilermaker.
Oxley's decision to attend Purdue comes almost
a month after attending the Boilermakers' linemen camp from June 8-10.
Like Oxley, a 6-foot-7, 285-pounder from Fort Wayne's
Dwenger High School, Purdue's first two verbal commitments of the season
made decisions following participation in one of the Boilermakers' football
camps. Both quarterbacks Brandon Kirsch of Lebanon (Pa.) and
Chad Schroeder of Austin (Texas) attended Purdue's first ever
Elite Quarterbacks camp.
Purdue's first commitment came from Kirsch, a senior-to-be
at Cedar Crest High School. Kirsch passed for 1,595 yards and 20 touchdowns
while rushing for 360 yards and five touchdowns last year as a junior.
Following Kirsch, or maybe more importantly former
Purdue star QB Drew Brees, came Schroeder, who was Purdue's second verbal
commitment. Schroeder will come to Purdue from Westlake High School,
the same school Brees took to a state championship.
Schroeder, son of Westlake head football coach,
Ron, who coached Brees prior to his stellar Boiler career, is a 6-foot-1,
170-pound quarterback/receiver. Schroeder runs a 4.42 40-yard dash and
is set to be Westlake's starting quarterback this season as a senior.
