Friday the Purdue Board of Trustees will discuss
the reauthorization of the renovation of the Recreational Sports Center
that would include the installation of new aerobic and weight lifting
facilities.
The renovation would convert most of the basement
of the center into new aerobic, fitness and weight rooms. Ross Watson,
senior associate director of the Division of Recreational Sports, said
the rooms would offer modern apparatuses, air conditioning and a new
sound system.
He said if the money is available, the officials
would also like to set up outdoor lighting for the basement.
Architectural plans are being designed, and if
approved, construction of the $5 million project could start in January
with a completion date held some time later that fall. During the renovation
phase, the weight and aerobics equipment would be moved to the South
Gym where students would still have access to the equipment.
"Might be a little more crowded but it should work
out," said Watson.
The renovation would also include the installation
of a new elevator and better accessibility for the physically disabled.
Ken Burns, executive vice president and treasurer,
said the renovation was postponed over two years ago when there was
a defect in the state statute that would authorize bonding for the project.
It was corrected, and the board will vote to authorize the sale of the
bond to fund the project.
The board will also discuss the approval to finance
and construct a new Chiller Plant to be used to provide 12,000 tons
of chilled water to the University.
Burns said the plant would be located near the
Electrical Distribution Plant on Stadium Avenue.
The board will also discuss the approval of planning
and construction of a new Computer Science building proposed to be built
at the corner of University and Third streets.
The construction contract for the Visual and Performing
Arts building will also be awarded at the meeting.
The meeting will take place at 10:30 a.m.
today in the Stewart Center Room 326.
