Good sportsmanship goes a long way in representing Boilermakers

Fellow Boilermakers, this is just a quick note to emphasize and encourage the importance of good sportsmanship and positive team and school spirit as we approach hopefully yet another successful Purdue academic and athletic year.

While we enjoyed many victories last year, some were overshadowed by our overzealous, after-the-fact celebrations. I am in no way intending to indicate that we should not enthusiastically support Purdue in victory as well as defeat. However, let's try to keep our superior academic heads about us too.

The near riot situations and vandalism that ensued after the Women's basketball defeat in the national championship game may be acceptable at our rival university to the south, but it should not be tolerated at Purdue. Only by exercising a certain amount of discretion and yes, superiority, will we be able to keep Purdue's reputation as the "Harvard of the Midwest." This means that all of us must strive to conduct ourselves in a manner that sets us, as Boilermakers, on a pedestal.

Celebrate - by all means! Party - absolutely! Be proud of your university - undoubtedly! But, please, be responsible as well. You hold not only the reputation yourselves and your classmates in your hands, but those that went before you and those that will follow after. Hail Purdue!
