Many students waited on line Monday to have a piece of the newest addition to the Union Villa Pizza.
Several students, faculty and staff members were part of the first moments of the Italian-food restaurant, which opted for having a "soft opening" rather than having inauguration activities.
The menu, which features Italian recipes created by Villa Pizza's chairman and founder Michele Scotto, was well-received by customers.
"The food is really good," said Kristen Roseberry, a junior in the School of Agriculture. "And (the restaurant) is beautifully decorated."
The restaurant remained with at least a 10-person line from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. But the service appeared to be quick and friendly, said Brian Davis, a junior in the School of Liberal Arts.
The 4,600 square-foot restaurant located at the space that formerly was used by the Stripe Shop and an adjacent commons area on Monday featured a menu that consisted of pizza, salads, sandwiches, lasagna, pasta dishes, deserts and Starbucks coffee.
Ramiro Ramirez, a Lafayette resident, also attended the opening expecting to "find out what the whole deal about Villa was." He said he found the food inviting because of its good presentation.
Villa Pizza marks the first franchise store brought to the Union. Concerns arose at first when Purdue decided to establish a franchise store in the Union's ground floor; however, students such as Davis, who was wary at first, said the opening of a franchise store might create a balance among the various food services in the Union.
