Rush Pavilion was filled with animals Monday when
the Lafayette Park and Recreation Board introduced the new logo for
Columbian Park Zoo.
The new design consists of bright blue and yellow
colors, and Claudine Laufman, zoo director, said that the colors are
used to represent the children who will be visiting the zoo.
Among some of the animals to be featured at the
zoo are flamingos, snakes and monkeys, as presented by junior zookeepers
Lafayette area children.
Park superintendent Vicki Mayes said she was pleased
to see the new logo. To begin planning for the future, a resolution
was passed to issue bonds to fund more Lafayette area projects within
the upcoming years. Mayes said a total of $6.5 million in bonds will
be issued in two stages to improve, among other places, McCaw Park,
McAllister Recreation Center, Edgelea Pool and the Memorial Island Lagoon.
"Seventy-five percent of the last five year
plan has been completed and it is time to begin planning for the next
five years of service," said Mayes.
There will be a public hearing at 5 p.m. July 23
to further discuss the bond sale.
Another item of debate was the possible relocation
of Edgelea Pool to Armstrong Park. Presently the pool is located near
many schools that are convenient for children to walk to; however, if
the pool is relocated to Armstrong Park, it may become hard for children
to get there, said councilman Ron Campbell.
After hearing peoples views on the matter,
Mayes said, "Every one of the possible relocations has benefits
and challenges, but the board needs to weigh those with the publics
input."
Lafayette mayor Dave Heath said, "We are ready,
willing and able to move forward with our parks that will last for many
years to come and that the community will be proud of. Thanks for the
work in the past and for making our park system one of the best in the
state."
